Realistic texturing

Creating a more realistic texture:
1.
Lots of textures I see hand made in Photoshop look to smooth. Let's make a rough looking texture that we can use. Start out by making a new 400 x 400 image and fill it with a black background. Go into your channels tab. Create a new channel and fill it. Just go ahead and use white for now. We will change the colors later. After you fill it with white go to Filter/Noise/Add Noise. Use an amount of about 150, Uniform, and Monochromatic. And remember you are working in a new "channel" that you created, not a layer.

 2.
Now go to Filter/Blur/Motion Blur and use the settings of Angle: 28 and Distance 550

Note: As we are going through this tutorial and you have completed it try using different values and different settings to achieve your own special look. There are some steps that look pretty neat even before we finish up completely....

 3.
Go back into your layers tab and create a new layer. I filled my entire layer with a standard swatch color. The third brown from the left on the bottom row of the standard swatch palette.

 4.
Now while working on your new layer go to Filter/Render/Lighting Effects and use the following settings.
Style: Default
Light Type: Directional/with the "on" checked
Intensity: 35
Gloss: and Material: both to 100
Exposure: and Ambience: both at zero
Texture Channel: choose alpha 1
Height: 100

If you did that your image should look like the second image here on the left...
 5.
Now go to Filter/Texture/Texturizer and use the settings of
Scaling: 100
Relief: 4
Light Direction: Top

Then go to Filter/Artistic/Dry Brush and use the settings
Brush size: 2
Brush detail: 8
Texture: 2

Then go to Filter/Artistic/Fresco and use the settings
Brush size: 2
Brush detail: 8
Texture: 1

Then go to Filter/Artistic/Paint Daubs and use the settings
Brush size: 8
Sharpness: 7
Brush Type: Simple

Now go to Filter/Blur/Motion Blur and use the settings of Angle: 28 and Distance 550 (the same as we use before)

If all went well you should have something like I have here.
 6.
Duplicate this layer (by default it should be called layer 1) and then when you create the new layer by default it should be called layer 1 Copy. Just make sure layer 1 Copy is on "top" of layer1. Change the layer mode of layer 1 Copy to Hard Light:

Your image should have just gotten a lot brighter and more saturated...

Now go to Filter/Brush Strokes/Ink Outlines, and use these settings:

Stroke Length: 4
Dark Intensity: 20
Light Intensity: 10

Now go to Filter/Blur/Motion Blur and use the settings of Angle: 28 and Distance 550 (the same as we use before)
 7.
Now while still working in layer 1 Copy go to Filter/Sharpen/Sharpen
Run this step again.

Then go to Filter/Sharpen/UnSharp Mask and use these settings:
Amount: 200
Radius: 98
Threshold: 114

Now go to Filter/Distort/Pinch and use an amount of: 50

Next go to Filter/Distort/Glass and use these settings:
Distortion: 5
Smoothness: 3
Texture: Frosted
Scaling: 100% and leave the "invert box" UN-checked
 8.
Now For the few final steps I did to create my texture. I went into my Image/Adjust/Hue Saturation and checked the "colorize" box. Then used the settings of Hue: 30 Saturation: 56 and Lightness: -4

Then I duplicated this layer ( should be called layer 1 copy 2) ran the Filter/Sketch/Chrome with a setting of:
Detail: 4
Smoothness: 7

Then changed the layer mode of layer 1 copy 2 to overlay and dropped the opacity to 50%

Now we should have a nice sort of rusted metallic texture we can use in any of our images...
