Ready to get dirty? Let's make some dirt.

Making some realistic Dirt:
1.
Start out by making a new 400x400 image. Using your color swatch use two earth tones. I have marked the two colors I used with arrows. Use the dark color as your background color and the lighter for your foreground color.

 2.
Go to filter/Render/Clouds. Next go to filter/texture/craquelure and use the setting of Crack Spacing=2 Crack Depth=0 Crack Brightness=0. Repeat this step one more time.

 3.
Now duplicate this layer by dragging it into the create new layer box and on the new layer run the filter/Brush Strokes/Spatter with the settings of Spray Radius=25 Smoothness=1. Now click on your magic wand tool and in the magic wand options set them to tolerance=2 and "all" the boxes need to be unchecked. Then click the magic wand on the new layer (remembering that this selection is going to be your dirt so make as large or small of selection as you want the dirt to be).

 4.
With your selection made go ahead and close the layer we just used and create a new layer . On the new empty layer with the selection still active go to edit/fill and choose black. Hit Ctrl+D to deselect that layer now. Double click on this layer and rename it Dark. Drag this layer into the create new layer box and name this layer Light, then drag the light layer under the dark layer. With the light layer as your active layer hit Ctrl+I to turn this layer white instead of black. Now using the move tool and your arrow keys move this layer down one pixel and change the opacity to 35%.
 5.
Now if you want to go an extra step and give your dirt some depth or height go ahead and merge the light and dark layers together. Then go to layer/effects/bevel and emboss and leave everything the default values except for changing the depth to 15 and the blur to 2.
