Pank Metal look


Making a metallic sphere with text under glass:
KPT 5.01 required... you can download the two required files here.

YOU MUST UPDATE YOUR VERSION OF KPT TO 5.01 FOR THE PRESETS TO WORK!!

Start out by making a new 400x400 image. Choose your background color and make a new layer . On the new layer use the elliptical marquee tool while holding down your shift key to make a perfect circle about the height and width of your background. Then run filter/KPT5/shapeshifter and use the custom setting you downloaded (pankmetal1.kpt5). Name this layer base.

(to use the KPT5 custom settings download the two files I have provided and then unzip and copy and paste them into your adobe/photoshop/plugins/KPT5/presets/shapeshifter/ folder and the next time you start up KPT5 you should see them ready to go)

Drag the base layer into the create new layer box and name this layer mid. While working in the mid layer go to edit/transform/scale (in version 6.0 you will notice that the numeric option is no longer there, but look up in your toolbar and you will see the percentages). In the toolbar you should now see two percentage boxes. Make sure the constrain button is pressed in to maintain the aspect ratio and type in 85% to shrink the image. Now go to the layer/layer style/bevel and emboss, and use the settings of Style= Inner Bevel/ Technique= Smooth/ Depth= 550/ Direction= Down/ Size= 8/ Soften= 6/ Angle= 120/ Altitude= 30/ Highlight Mode= change the color to black and raise the opacity to 100% and change the Mode to normal/ Shadow Mode= repeat the same steps as for the Highlight mode. Hit ok.

Now duplicate the layer we named "mid" by dragging it into the create new layer box name this new layer glass. Ctrl+click on this new layer to select it. Once the selection is made create another new layer and name it glass base. On this new layer run filter/KPT5/shapeshifter and use the custom setting you downloaded (pankmetal2.kpt5). With the glass base layer still selected run the filter/blur/Guassian Blur and use a setting of about 21. Now hit Ctrl+D to deselect this layer and hit Ctrl+E to merge it with the layer below.

Now create your text on top off all of the layers. I would suggest using white and once you have your text center it in the glass sphere and change the mode to soft light and change the opacity to 50-85%. The lower the opacity the more it will look like your text is under the glass. Now drag the glass layer into the create new layer box and move it above the text layer you just created. Now go to the layer/layer style/bevel and emboss and remove the checkbox from the apply area to get rid of the effects on this layer. Now change the blending mode to color dodge for this layer and also change the opacity to about 15%. Now drag this layer into the create new layer box and change the blending mode to soft light and leave the opacity at about 15%. You can also now add a dropshadow if you wish to the very bottom layer. For the final shot I also added a bevel and emboss setting to the text layer. I'll stop here but this is where you can really start to experiment around and get some awesome settings and effects.
